Colophon
How this site is built.
Design
The design is based on Low-tech Magazine (opens in a new tab), the solar-powered website: ink on paper, thin rules and nothing that doesn't need to be there. It follows your device's light or dark setting, and the switch in the footer overrides it.
Type
There are no web fonts. Text is set in the serif your device already has (Times New Roman, or Tinos or Liberation Serif on Linux), with notes and figures in its monospace font.
Images
Every picture is dithered to one colour with the site's own dither tool and saved as a small PNG, usually under 20 kB. The colour is added by the stylesheet, so the same file works in light and dark.
Code
The pages are plain HTML with one stylesheet. A short Python script copies the shared header and footer into each page and writes the sitemap, and runs again on GitHub whenever the site changes. JavaScript is used only for the light/dark switch, the page readout in the footer and the tools. Everything else works without it.
Hosting
The site is hosted on GitHub Pages and reached through Cloudflare, which handles the domain, HTTPS and caching. Bin days gets its dates from a small Cloudflare Worker. There are no cookies, analytics or third-party scripts; the privacy page has the details.
Weight
The footer of every page shows how much it weighed and how many requests it took, measured by your browser as it loaded.
